Overview

Psirens are large, cockroach-like predators whose principal weapon is a victim's perception. They inhabit asteroids and lure travellers with telepathic images before extracting their brains through small metal straws. Their attractive or familiar appearances are therefore hunting devices rather than reliable evidence of another species. In the sixth-series opener the missing Red Dwarf and Starbug's vulnerable crew provide a setting in which apparent assistance, rescue signals and intimate fantasies can all be traps. An encounter with a threatening body is easier to recognize than an encounter that seems to offer exactly what a stranded traveller wants. The creature's real form and luminous blood eventually make the deception bodily and unpleasant rather than an abstract dream.

The attack also exploits programming and personal history. One Psiren takes Professor Mamet's appearance and orders Kryten to destroy himself, turning obedience to a creator into a weakness. For Lister, seductive and familiar images draw on established hopes and desires. These differences make the predators an ensemble threat: one generic disguise would not exploit every crew member equally. The published shooting script is a useful separate treatment because Primordial Soup appeared before the episode's delayed broadcast. The official writing history identifies an omitted moment in which a blood trail was itself an illusion and a disguised Psiren. That discarded idea belongs to the script-development record; it should not be used to enlarge the abilities demonstrated by the aired episode. Psirens are treated here as a predatory organism type, while intelligent manipulation alone does not establish a documented civilization.
