Overview
Scarab Demons are enlarged, altered beetles encountered in Diablo II's desert journey. Their defining hazard is electrical retaliation: striking one causes Charged Bolts to spread outward, making a surrounded attacker vulnerable to repeated discharges. They also pursue and encircle opponents quickly. The family includes Dung Soldiers, Death Beetles, Scarabs, Steel Scarabs and Bone Scarabs rather than one specimen with a single fixed resistance profile.
Blizzard calls the family Animal in its monster classification despite the demonic common name, showing that nomenclature and gameplay flags need not coincide. Variants differ in regeneration, elemental damage and resistance, so this account avoids converting tables into permanent biological measurements. Diablo II and its Resurrected treatment provide the primary depictions. No historical Egyptian religious origin or creator inspiration is inferred solely from the creature's scarab-shaped body and familiar name.
First appearances & development
Selected treatment: Diablo II (2000). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. This profile follows Diablo II and its named expansion or remaster, not every later Diablo game. Difficulty, variants and patches change attacks and resistances.
Canon & continuity
Blizzard's individual Arreat Summit monster page supports this creature family's lore, named variants and selected behavior. Diablo II supplies the original encounter, and Diablo II: Resurrected supplies the later visual treatment. The guide itself warns that its comparison statistics may differ from actual gameplay; numerical tables are not treated here as permanent lore.

Family, evolution & connections
Scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae)
Blizzard identifies Scarab Demons as mutated beetle-like insects and includes scarab-named variants. Scarabaeidae is the real beetle family relevant to that name. The game creatures’ electrical counterattacks and supernatural origin remain fictional. The name supports a limited animal comparison, not membership in real taxonomy, a specific beetle identification, or a creator-confirmed account of artistic inspiration.
Khepri
Blizzard’s Arreat Summit describes the Scarab Demon as a mutated beetle with electrical attacks. Toledo’s winged scarab amulet label associates scarab imagery with Khepri, renewal and protection. This juxtaposes a game enemy and an Egyptian religious symbol through their beetle motif. It supplies no designer testimony that Khepri inspired the Diablo creature, and their different functions should not be collapsed into one mythology.
