Overview
Claw Vipers are fast serpentine monsters serving the armies of the Three in Diablo II. Their charging attacks close distance abruptly and can carry elemental effects, including cold that slows an opponent. Tomb Vipers, Salamanders, Pit Vipers and Serpent Magi appear under the same family heading, but their names and resistances should not be read as descriptions of actual snakes or amphibians.
The Arreat Summit deliberately leaves their origin disputed, offering a sorceress's curse and infernal development as competing explanations. That uncertainty is part of the available lore and should not be replaced by a definite creation story. Diablo II: Resurrected preserves a second released depiction of these encounters with updated imagery. This entry describes the monster form and selected game behavior; it does not claim a complete account of Viper society, later franchise variants or every patch's attack interactions.
First appearances & development
Selected treatment: Diablo II (2000). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. This profile follows Diablo II and its named expansion or remaster, not every later Diablo game. Difficulty, variants and patches change attacks and resistances.
Canon & continuity
Blizzard's individual Arreat Summit monster page supports this creature family's lore, named variants and selected behavior. Diablo II supplies the original encounter, and Diablo II: Resurrected supplies the later visual treatment. The guide itself warns that its comparison statistics may differ from actual gameplay; numerical tables are not treated here as permanent lore.

Family, evolution & connections
Vipers (Viperidae)
The Claw Viper guide groups viper and serpent names with a salamander-named variant, while leaving the creatures’ fictional origin disputed. Viperidae supplies the real reference for the viper portion of the naming. This is a name connection rather than a taxonomic assignment; neither the mixed variant names nor speculative in-game origins demonstrate a real evolutionary lineage.
