Overview

Sand Maggots inhabit Sanctuary's desert regions, but Blizzard's Diablo II guide explicitly identifies them as arthropods rather than true worms. Their eggs once supplied local inhabitants with a protein-rich food paste. The corrupted creatures' eggs, larvae and adult flesh are now poisonous, and adults spit a substance described as both toxic and corrosive. A hard chitinous exterior protects the mature animal.

Their underground movement supports both ambush and retreat: a wounded Maggot can disappear, recover and emerge elsewhere. Adults also lay eggs that produce young, making the life cycle part of an encounter rather than a detached background note. Rock Worms, Devourers, Giant Lampreys and Blood Maggots remain within this family profile. Diablo II: Resurrected retells the selected encounters visually; the names do not imply a biological connection to Dune's very different sandworms.

First appearances & development

Selected treatment: Diablo II (2000). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. This profile follows Diablo II and its named expansion or remaster, not every later Diablo game. Difficulty, variants and patches change attacks and resistances.

Canon & continuity

Blizzard's individual Arreat Summit monster page supports this creature family's lore, named variants and selected behavior. Diablo II supplies the original encounter, and Diablo II: Resurrected supplies the later visual treatment. The guide itself warns that its comparison statistics may differ from actual gameplay; numerical tables are not treated here as permanent lore.
