Overview

The legacy rug is a slow-moving, large construct whose ordinary appearance conceals an attack directed at a Medium or smaller creature. A successful Smother grapples the victim, restrains and blinds it, and places it at risk of suffocation while continued crushing damage arrives on its turns. The rug cannot smother another target at the same time. Damaging it during this hold is complicated: the legacy Damage Transfer trait assigns half the damage to the rug and the other half to its captive. This creates a rescue problem rather than a simple invitation to attack the material around an ally.

The 2014 creature also has a motionless disguise and a specific vulnerability to antimagic and dispel magic. The revised Animated Rug of Smothering retains the wrapping threat but changes the opening attack: it can deal direct bludgeoning damage or replace that damage with the grapple against an eligible creature. The restrained and blinded captive is explicitly suffocating, and the rug cannot use Smother again while maintaining the hold. Damage sharing now specifies rounding down the damage taken by the rug and applying that same amount to the victim, rather than assigning the other half. Its revised block omits the old named disguise and antimagic traits. These alterations should be checked when importing an encounter from an older book. Neither version is a flying carpet that transports riders, and the urban habitat does not establish a particular maker or automatic obedience to whoever owns the furnishings.

First appearances & development

The selected witnesses are the legacy Rug of Smothering associated with the 2014 core rules and Animated Rug of Smothering in Monster Manual (2025). The revised name is grouped into this single creature profile. Other enchanted carpets, especially transport items, are separate creations unless a specific adventure explicitly combines their properties.

Canon & continuity

Both publisher records were checked for grapple size, captive conditions, ongoing damage and the restriction to one held victim. The changed initial attack and damage-sharing wording are recorded directly. Legacy anti-magic and disguise rules remain edition-specific; speculative forum escape methods and theories of carpet ownership were excluded from the canonical account.
