Overview
The legacy flying sword moves through the air as though a warrior were wielding it, but the weapon itself is the creature. It has hit points and can be destroyed: the description’s image of an uninjurable fighter does not override the actual block. Its flying movement includes hovering, while its ground speed is zero. Blindsight lets it perceive within a limited radius without ordinary vision, and poison and psychic damage cannot harm it. False Appearance has an important restriction: the sword resembles an ordinary weapon only while motionless and not flying. A conspicuously hovering blade therefore does not automatically receive the same disguise.
The older construct is incapacitated within an antimagic field, and dispel magic can temporarily stop it after a failed saving throw. The revised Monster Manual renames the record Animated Flying Sword, retaining the same fundamental autonomous weapon rather than establishing a second species. It still flies and hovers, but also receives a small ground movement allowance; its attack is now called Slash rather than Longsword. The revised block does not list the legacy False Appearance or Antimagic Susceptibility traits, and its health and attack values differ. These are edition-specific rules, not a story that every blade physically evolved new anatomy. The urban habitat label supports use among built environments, but neither block requires a particular owner, production ritual or sworn allegiance. Animation and wielding should also remain distinct from a character merely carrying an enchanted sword.
First appearances & development
The selected comparison joins Flying Sword from the legacy fifth-edition record to Animated Flying Sword from Monster Manual (2025). The added word in the revised name is treated as an editorial classification within the same profile. Earlier animated weapons and named magical swords are not automatically absorbed into this creature type.
Canon & continuity
The publisher’s individual records provide flight, hovering, senses, damage immunities and separate attack names. The legacy restriction that disguise requires not flying was checked rather than shortened into a universal motionless disguise. Revised ground movement and trait omissions are recorded without inventing a designer’s explanation, new anatomy or blanket antimagic resistance.
