Overview
The legacy publisher description presents animated plate armor as clanking and grinding through movement, evoking a fallen knight seeking vengeance. That comparison describes its unsettling appearance; it does not establish that a dead knight’s ghost inhabits every suit. Its attacks are slams delivered by the armor itself. When motionless, the 2014 creature is indistinguishable from ordinary armor, which lets an apparently decorative or abandoned object become an encounter. Blindsight replaces normal visual dependence, with the older block explicitly limiting perception beyond its sensing radius. Poison and psychic damage do not affect it, and several conditions that trouble living opponents are ineffective.
The same older record makes the construct susceptible to interruption of its animating magic. An antimagic field incapacitates it, while dispel magic can temporarily render it unconscious if its saving throw fails. The revised block retains its armored defenses, two slam attacks and blindsight but omits both Antimagic Susceptibility and False Appearance as named traits. Their absence is a change in what this specific monster block grants; it is not a statement that all animated armor resists every antimagic effect. The newer habitat label is urban. Neither accessible record supplies a mandatory creator, intelligence beyond the listed capacities, or a civilization of armor people. The profile therefore treats it as an animated object and encounter creature, while leaving any commissioned guardian, haunted suit or individual personality to the relevant adventure.
First appearances & development
Animated Armor is covered through the selected 2014 and 2025 Monster Manual records, not an exhaustive history of magical armor across D&D settings. Both witnesses classify it as a Construct. The legacy evocative comparison with a fallen knight is retained as atmosphere rather than converted into a literal spirit origin.
Canon & continuity
The individual publisher blocks support the plate-armor description, slam attacks, senses, immunities and legacy interaction with antimagic and dispel magic. The revised record was checked for its retained attacks and omitted traits. No explanation drawn from player forum discussions is attributed to the publisher or used to invent a revised backstory.
