Overview
Quematrice is a brute wyvern that scatters a volatile flammable substance and ignites it by rubbing its tail across the material. Its fire use is therefore presented through a specific bodily action rather than only a generic breath attack. The official guide describes it as a scavenger that seldom hunts prey itself, instead competing with smaller carnivores over herbivore carcasses.
Wilds introduces the species, while the later Monster Hunter Now encounter documents a separate treatment of its tail-centered attacks. In the mobile game, tail damage and severing reduce its reach and flame options, connecting a breakable body part with its defining weapon. Now's 2023 original release year does not date this species' introduction there. The profile follows the ordinary creature and selected published ecology; no chemical formula or complete feeding hierarchy is invented from its volatile secretions and scavenging behavior.
First appearances & development
Introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds (2025). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Game Hunter's Notes and encounters are the baseline; subspecies, variants, spin-offs and numerical mechanics require title attribution.
Canon & continuity
The exact official Monster Hunter Now creature profile directly supports the selected ecology, visible anatomy and mobile encounter behavior. Monster Hunter Wilds provides the other named primary game treatment. Now is an evolving game first released in 2023; this date does not assert that the species appeared at launch. Numerical balance and later variants are not fully surveyed.

Family, evolution & connections
Cockatrice and Spanish quema naming inputs
In RPG Spain’s published interview, Yuya Tokuda explicitly explains the name as combining cockatrice with a Spanish fire-related quema element. This documents naming inputs, not descent from a folklore creature. The interviewer’s separate Lala Barina flamenco premise is not confirmed as its design origin.
