Overview

Putrid Defilers are parasitic monsters in Baal's forces, equipped with sharp forelegs and a means of infecting other demons with Pain Worms. Blizzard's account describes the parasites traveling into a host's brain; if the infected monster dies, worms emerge from the skull and seek another body. The creature therefore adds a second threat to apparently completed fights, making a dead opponent a possible source of new attackers.

The original guide identifies this behavior through the Impregnate ability and lists Wretched, Fetid and Rancid Defilers as related variants. Its grotesque explanation belongs to Sanctuary's fiction and should not be mistaken for a medical description of parasitic disease. Lord of Destruction introduces the selected form, and Resurrected provides a later depiction. This entry also keeps it distinct from StarCraft's Defiler, whose biochemical abilities operate through an entirely different fictional biology.

First appearances & development

Introduced in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (2001). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. This profile follows Diablo II and its named expansion or remaster, not every later Diablo game. Difficulty, variants and patches change attacks and resistances.

Canon & continuity

Blizzard's individual Arreat Summit monster page supports this creature family's lore, named variants and selected behavior. Diablo II: Lord of Destruction supplies the original encounter, and Diablo II: Resurrected supplies the later visual treatment. The guide itself warns that its comparison statistics may differ from actual gameplay; numerical tables are not treated here as permanent lore.
