Overview
The mulefa's bodies follow an unusual diamond arrangement, with limbs at four corners rather than the familiar bilateral layout of Earth mammals. A mature individual, called a zalif, fits wheel-tree seed pods onto front and rear spurs and propels itself with the side limbs. A prehensile trunk manipulates objects and participates in communication. Their ability to see Dust makes Mary Malone's inquiry intelligible through a different kind of perception.
The community's relationship with wheel-trees is reciprocal: rolling helps break the hard pods open, and the mulefa germinate seeds that keep the trees growing. Their culture therefore joins movement, cultivation and remembered history. The third television season adapts the difficult body plan. Dodgson describes consultation on joint and muscle movement, then using leg positions, balance and suspension to make rolling understandable on screen. The resulting screen choices concern animation and performance; the novel's diamond anatomy remains its own description.
First appearances & development
The Amber Spyglass (2000) introduces the mulefa and Mary Malone's life among them. Chapters 10 and 17 locate their bodies and Dust-related understanding. The 2022 television season adapts the society and its wheel-pod relationship; singular zalif and plural mulefa remain one people profile rather than duplicate entries.
Canon & continuity
The inspected wiki supplies chapter-indexed anatomy, wheel use and tree symbiosis. A direct interview with Dodgson documents the adaptation's movement problem and design consultation, while Bad Wolf's official synopsis confirms the third-season introduction. No claims about exact evolutionary duration or speculative Earth ancestors are needed for this bounded account.

Family, evolution & connections
Rollerbladers at Lake Bled and a discussion of living wheels
Pullman traces the wheeled mulefa idea to discussing rollerbladers at Lake Bled with his son. This is author testimony, not fictional ancestry.
Author’s seedpod-wheel requirement for television adaptation
McCulloch says Pullman specifically requested mulefa that roll on seedpods. The team developed bones and fur around that requirement, with advance work by Collins and Dodgson. This is a television-production account, distinct from the original literary conception.
