Overview
Tualapi arrive as a danger to the mulefa's settled life rather than as a general category of every bird in their world. They destroy villages and cause the loss of seed pods, undermining both shelter and the objects the mulefa depend on for movement. Retreat inland is the local community's practical response when it cannot repel a raid.
The destruction includes fouling the damaged settlement, making reconstruction harder after the immediate attack. The contrast with the mulefa's care for wheel-trees exposes a different kind of ecological interaction: the harm is not merely a lost individual but damage to the infrastructure sustaining everyday life. Mary Malone encounters the resulting fear and disruption as part of understanding a world whose apparently peaceful inhabitants still face external threats.
First appearances & development
The Amber Spyglass (2000) introduces tualapi in the mulefa world, with chapter 10 providing a specific source locator. This bounded profile follows that novel's attacking birds. It does not assign them a made-up Earth taxonomic ancestry, turn individual raids into separate species or infer an unseen history from their antagonistic role.
Canon & continuity
The inspected wiki identifies the novel appearance, destructive raids and mulefa response. The Amber Spyglass is the one substantive primary witness supplied here; an unrelated later book or adaptation episode is not added to simulate breadth. Detailed breeding, population counts and complete diet are not established by the selected account.
