Overview
Novel Gallivespians are hand-sized humanoids with dangerous heel spurs. The venom can disable or kill a much larger opponent, but its potency requires time to recover after use. Their short lives and small stature do not prevent scientific skill or organized clans. Lodestone resonators support communication, and specially bred large dragonflies give agents flying transport.
Persecution by larger humans in their own world helps explain their participation in Asriel's rebellion. The companions of Lyra and Will bring distinct motives and capacities to the underworld journey. Television changes the visible means of flight: its third-season beings have their own retractable wings rather than relying on the novel's dragonfly mounts. Those screen wings are not evidence that the book people always concealed them.
First appearances & development
The Amber Spyglass (2000) introduces the Gallivespian agents and their home-world conflict. The 2022 television adaptation modifies selected characters and anatomy. This profile preserves a single people across those treatments, with publication and version distinctions rather than using every named spy or altered title to create another species entry.
Canon & continuity
The inspected Gallivespian reference indexes The Amber Spyglass chapters 6 and 25 for lifespan and poison and separately identifies the television's wings. Bad Wolf confirms the third-season introduction. The profile excludes the reference's speculative name etymology and does not assume that all members have identical loyalties, occupations or inherited aristocratic titles.
