Overview
An angel's substance is Dust rather than ordinary flesh, although it can appear as a winged humanlike figure. Rank affects how easily its presence is seen, and its ability to influence the physical world differs from that of a person with a material body. Some angels originate in concentrated Dust, while others have a human past.
They are not one morally uniform group. The Authority's supporters and Xaphania's rebels oppose one another, while Baruch and Balthamos become involved in Will's journey. The longing for bodily sensation complicates the assumption that spiritual form is simply superior to embodied life. Their conflicts turn the label angel into a description of nature and office, rather than a guarantee of identical beliefs or benevolent behaviour.
First appearances & development
The Subtle Knife (1997) introduces angels within the widening conflict, and The Amber Spyglass develops their nature, loyalties and relationship with embodied people. The original trilogy's theology is specific to Pullman's invented multiverse. Traditional religious descriptions or other franchises' angels are not imported as automatic anatomical or moral facts.
Canon & continuity
The inspected Angel reference indexes The Subtle Knife chapters 6 and 12 and the later novel's rebel companions. Primary bibliography identifies both substantial treatments. Their substance, relative visibility and divisions are summarized within the original trilogy; neither a newly completed full-novel reread nor an exhaustive hierarchy of every named angel is claimed.
