Overview
Panserbjørne resemble enormous polar bears but have the dexterity and intelligence needed for skilled metalworking and speech. They forge their own armour from sky-iron as they mature. Its personal significance differs from ordinary protective equipment: losing armour damages the bear's standing and sense of self. They do not possess the visible animal dæmon that normally accompanies a human in Lyra's world.
Svalbard's bear society has kingship and conventions of combat, although bears also value their independence. Iorek Byrnison's exile and return expose the consequences of a ruler adopting human pretensions and becoming vulnerable to deception. Once Upon a Time in the North provides an earlier encounter with Iorek and Lee Scoresby. The bears' strength and ferocity consequently coexist with craftsmanship, politics and individual relationships rather than reducing the whole people to attacking wildlife.
First appearances & development
Northern Lights (1995) introduces the armoured bears, Iorek and the Svalbard succession struggle. Once Upon a Time in the North (2008) later supplies a prequel encounter. Their apparent polar-bear form does not remove their fictional sapience; this profile classifies them as a people rather than as real Arctic animals.
Canon & continuity
The inspected Panserbjørn reference indexes Northern Lights chapters 11 and 13 for armour and anatomy and the prequel for maturation detail. Bibliography distinguishes publication order from fictional chronology. Neither every bear's values nor the exceptional histories of Iorek and Iofur are treated as identical throughout the population.
