Overview

A cliff-ghast is smaller than an adult human but formidable in the air, with leathery wings, hooked claws, bulging eyes and a broad, frog-like mouth. The creatures scavenge carrion and can take smaller animals. Northern Lights makes their aerial presence an immediate hazard around the northern journey, while their unpleasant smell reinforces the encounter's physical threat.

The Subtle Knife gives them language and a respected elder called Grandfather, whose account places them within the approaching war's ancient history. The second television season also presents speech rather than only attacking cries. Sound designer Eilam Hoffman combined short animal sounds with his own voice into phrases, and the production retained subtitles instead of turning the language into ordinary English. Their speech is therefore preserved as an aspect of agency even in a monster encounter.

First appearances & development

Northern Lights (1995) introduces the cliff-ghasts in the Arctic setting; The Subtle Knife chapter 13 expands their speech and remembered history. The television adaptation later distinguishes their first-season attack sounds from second-season conversation. A single named elder is used to explain their lore, not counted as another creature type.

Canon & continuity

The inspected wiki indexes Northern Lights chapter 18 and The Subtle Knife chapter 13. Hoffman's direct interview supports the composite screen speech and subtitle choice. The account does not claim that recordings of apes, birds or sea mammals establish fictional ancestry, or that every cliff-ghast possesses the elder's knowledge.
