Overview
The Mearas are an exceptional line of horses associated with Rohan, valued for strength, intelligence and unusually long lives. Felaróf stands at the beginning of their recorded relationship with the royal line, while Shadowfax is the best-known later representative. Their refusal to bear just any rider makes consent to a partnership an important part of the account. Gandalf's acceptance is an exception to their ordinary association with the rulers of the Mark.
The tradition that their ancestors came from the West with Béma is presented as a tradition, not a complete biological history verified by every character. Shadowfax's journeys during the War of the Ring demonstrate the practical consequence of an extraordinary horse without making him a talking humanoid people. This entry follows the novel and appendices and does not repeat a calculated average lifespan as though Tolkien had supplied an exact zoological measurement for every Mearas.
First appearances & development
This profile uses 1954 and 1955 novel and appendices as its selected publication context. The bibliography identifies particular published narratives, poems, manuscript histories or an explicitly named adaptation. Publication dates describe those works, not a claim that all the underlying texts were composed then. Posthumous editorial syntheses and earlier draft versions are kept distinct from Tolkien's lifetime novels.
Canon & continuity
Tolkien Gateway is an independent, citation-bearing reference rather than an official publisher source. Its named textual references support the bounded identification and scene comparison here. Public article and MediaWiki API reads were used for the creature accounts. The bibliography directs readers to the primary works; no complete reread of every cited volume or manuscript is claimed.
