Overview
Lekgolo are individual wormlike organisms capable of arranging themselves into larger collective entities. The familiar armoured Hunter is a colony configuration, not one giant humanoid animal under the armour. Other assemblages can occupy equipment or perform different tasks, allowing the same biological basis to take several visible forms. Collective consciousness and participation in Covenant history make this a sapient species profile, rather than merely a list of ordinary worms.
The games introduce the formidable fighting colonies while later publications explain their composition and social relationships. Official accounts of named Hunter partners also preserve differences in age and growth instead of assuming that every pair forms on the same timetable. Mgalekgolo, machinery-bound forms and unusual configurations are discussed within the species concept rather than split into redundant variant entries. This treatment follows published game continuity, excluding automatic adoption of the television Silver Timeline's different scenes. The profile avoids a blanket claim of immunity to every Flood threat, and it does not use uninspected upcoming content to redefine all earlier appearances.
First appearances & development
The armoured Hunter forms appear in 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved; later games and reference material make their colonial Lekgolo nature explicit. This profile treats individual worms and their coordinated gestalts as one species with different organisations. The Covenant political and cultural setting makes this a sapient-species entry, while television imagery and later speculative material require their own continuity labels.
Canon & continuity
The official High-Value Histories feature directly documents a colony that divided into two Hunter forms with different dispositions. Its proposed parent-and-child interpretation is identified as speculation rather than a universal reproductive rule. The species reference supplies broader colonial biology. The profile does not infer that every Hunter pair has exactly that history or that every worm has identical individuality.

Worm and snake movement (TV animation reference)
Animation supervisor Martin Hesselink describes client direction combining unsettling worm and snake movements while avoiding literal imitation of either. This concerns MPC’s television episode-3 swarm performance in the Silver Timeline; it does not establish the species’ original game-design inspiration or fictional ancestry.
