Kawauso, named plate by Toriyama Sekien
Printed name 獺 and complete composition individually inspected at enlarged resolution. Actual URL copied from the IIIF manifest.
Overview
Kawauso appears as an otter-like creature standing on two legs beside a wooden fence. A pointed face, whiskers, paws and a long tail remain visible beneath layered human clothing. Its broad hat has uneven projecting edges, and containers hang around the body. The setting includes bare branches and a suspended net-like object above the fence. The upright posture and travelling equipment make the animal seem to participate in human activity.
The printed title uses the character for otter, with a reading identifying Kawauso. Sekien gives the creature a recognizably animal face while surrounding it with everyday accessories. This is a specific folkloric representation, distinct from a natural-history profile of a living otter. The page contains no separate person being deceived and does not demonstrate a completed transformation into a human.
