Overview

Lore derives the infestor from the borbu matriarch, a colony-like animal assimilated by the Swarm. Its legs soften soil for burrowing, and sensory tentacles help it navigate while concealed. Its neural parasite enters a target and imposes temporary control. Fictional descriptions emphasize the victim's continuing awareness and the resulting terror, rather than turning control into proof that every affected individual has permanently become zerg. Fungal secretions provide another way to expose or hinder enemies, with exact movement effects varying between game versions.

Early gameplay also let infestors deploy infested terrans, an ability that should not be listed as universal contemporary multiplayer equipment. Blizzard's October 2019 balance proposal removes it and introduces Microbial Shroud to protect ground forces against aerial fire. Campaigns, cooperative commanders and later patches can retain other combinations. The consistent role is indirect support: a weakly protected specialist can alter an engagement through control, concealment or protective organisms. That shared purpose explains the family resemblance between versions without pretending they have an identical spell list or an unchanging numerical duration.

First appearances & development

The infestor entered released StarCraft II with Wings of Liberty (2010), following earlier development iterations. Its borbu lineage is a fictional assimilation claim reported by the game's lore references. Later multiplayer revisions changed its available battlefield organisms; the form's identity does not require every historical ability to remain simultaneously usable.

Canon & continuity

The indexed specialist entry transcribes anatomy, parasites and mode distinctions. Blizzard's October 2019 announcement directly documents the removal of Infested Terran and introduction of Microbial Shroud. It is a dated balance proposal, not a complete present-day rules sheet. Campaign and cooperative behavior are kept separate from that multiplayer change.
