Overview

A Hobgoblin’s lean frame and horn-mounted sensors distinguish it from the common Goblin. The original Grimoire identifies advanced optics for sniping and a milky radiolarian fluid inside the body. When attacked, the frame can enclose itself in protective stasis and wait for assistance. Destinypedia describes the usual Line Rifle, a hazardous defensive shield and the possibility of recovering health while protected. Head destruction changes that ordinary encounter behavior: the damaged frame shoots faster but less precisely and loses its normal shield response.

The Taken King’s Hobgoblin card addresses the unit as an energy source whose first purpose is supplying power where thought needs it. Eliminating threats is a second function, and Taking grants retaliation suited to its priority-target status. The card does not reduce the ordinary form to a sniper-only mechanism. Its transformation context also prevents the altered powers from being assigned indiscriminately to every Hobgoblin. Destiny 2 includes visual and encounter revisions, but neither those revisions nor the fantasy name establish a biological relationship to traditional hobgoblins. This is a Vex working and fighting frame within a shared technological system.

First appearances & development

Hobgoblins appear in Destiny (2014); their inspected Taking text belongs to The Taken King (2015). The recurring frame also appears in Destiny 2. This profile foregrounds original specialization and the distinct transformed narrative, leaving detailed later subtypes and Champion rules to their particular releases rather than silently merging them.

02

Canon & continuity

Ishtar Collective preserves the inspected original Hobgoblin and Taken Hobgoblin cards. The first supports sensors, fluid and stasis; the second supplies the energy-function interpretation. Destinypedia provides reference-mediated encounter details. Its statement about a weapon’s theoretical energy source is not converted into confirmed real physics or a universal account of all Vex weapons.
