Overview

The Hammerpede is the elongated, hooded organism encountered in the chamber of leaking ampoules in Prometheus. The film associates its appearance with small worms exposed to the pathogen, although the exact origin of those initial worms is not established here. A seemingly approachable animal suddenly coils around Milburn and breaks his arm. Attempts to cut it free reveal rapid regeneration and corrosive fluid, turning a small encounter into a lethal failure of judgement.

Its body can flatten and extend through restricted spaces, culminating in the attack inside Milburn's suit. VFX supervisor Charley Henley describes the collaboration between Neal Scanlan's animatronic and MPC's digital animal, including head opening, regrowth and extreme coiling. A snake-based rig supplied technical movement controls, not a canonical terrestrial family tree. The screen encounter establishes an exceptionally dangerous mutant; it does not prove that this form is an obligatory stage in every xenomorph life cycle.

First appearances & development

Prometheus introduced the Hammerpede in 2012 as one of the first visible dangerous consequences associated with the leaking ampoules. The film and direct effects interview identify the encounter represented here. The name is descriptive production terminology, and the snake-based digital rig does not prove that the original worms were terrestrial or that the monster is a standard xenomorph stage.

Canon & continuity

Henley's direct interview supports the practical/digital collaboration, coiling, regrowth and suit-interior effects. The independent Prometheus creature account supports the released encounter. Its unconfirmed argument that the initial worms came from Earth is excluded. A mutant's visible regenerative action is sufficient for this profile without extrapolating the same capacity to every Alien organism.
