Overview

Engineers are the ancient humanoid beings whose technology and remains become central to Prometheus. Their relationship to human origins and to destructive biological material gives exploration a dangerous religious and scientific dimension. The characters' desire to meet creators does not supply reliable knowledge of the civilization's motives, making unanswered questions part of the encounter.

Alien's original fossilized pilot image predates the later Engineer explanation and should retain that production distinction. Alien: Covenant develops additional events without resolving every historical possibility. An account must distinguish what the films show from characters' hypotheses and from external interpretations, especially when describing supposed creation plans or assigning a single intention to all Engineers.

Prometheus (2012) develops the Engineer civilization; Alien (1979) contains the earlier pilot image. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Principal films are the baseline; comics, games and crossover cosmologies are not silently merged.
