Overview
The original film follows Jen and Kira as survivors with different upbringings, while the prequel reveals a wider society organized into seven great clans. Their point-eared appearance is only part of that identity. Dreamfasting shares memories through contact, allowing an experience to become communal evidence, and related arts preserve or shape thoughts within physical forms. Female Gelfling are shown with wings used for limited airborne movement.
Clan cultures connect different landscapes with seafaring, farming, cave life, craft and political authority, rather than presenting one interchangeable population. The All-Maudra's institution unites them while also exposing them to a structure favored by Skeksis rule. Age of Resistance turns memory-sharing into a way to challenge the rulers' concealed exploitation. Clan distinctions remain within this profile rather than counted as seven invented separate species, and the term elfin describes appearance rather than importing the biology of Tolkien's Elves or a game ancestry.
First appearances & development
The 1982 film establishes the Gelfling heroes and memory-sharing, with companion mythology extending the world. The 2019 prequel places the seven-clan society earlier in the story. That historical setting should not be mistaken for earlier publication, and the prequel's expanded institutions are attributed to its own treatment.
Canon & continuity
The official Gelfling page and G glossary support dreamfasting, related arts, clans, the All-Maudra and physical presentation. The named film and prequel are the primary screen works. Exact clan population or lifespan figures are not generalized from isolated guide statements, and no full-new-reading claim is made for all associated novels.

- Mayrin (All-Maudra)
- Brea
- Seladon
- Tavra
Explicit maternal statement under All-Maudra (Mayrin), glossary A. No father, birth order or genealogy of the wider Gelfling people is supplied by this passage. Political authority over clans is not a descent relationship.
Mayrin’s daughters Brea, Seladon and Tavra
The glossary expressly names Mayrin as mother of Brea, Seladon and Tavra. This is one household in Age of Resistance, not ancestry for all Gelfling.
Faz Fazakas’s radio-controlled Jen and Kira heads
Fazakas explains replacing inefficient cable control with radio-controlled heads; Mullen describes the resulting freedom of movement. The connection concerns the film’s character performance, not Gelfling biology.
