Overview

Their bodies combine reptilian and scavenging-bird features, with beaks, tails and a second reduced arm pair beneath elaborate clothing. Their court assigns distinct roles to science, ritual, record-keeping, food and military enforcement, so they act through institutions as well as individual cruelty. The Crystal and the extraction of essence become instruments in their effort to resist aging and sustain dominance over other peoples.

They are not an independent natural species with an ordinary birth history. Each originates through the division of an urSkek and remains linked with an urRu counterpart; injury or death can affect both halves. The prequel develops exceptions and conflicts within the group, including the Heretic, preventing every character's outlook from being reduced to a biological rule. Their eventual reintegration makes the restoration of the Crystal also a restoration of divided beings, not simply the military elimination of a foreign army.

First appearances & development

The film's Skeksis appear in 1982, with companion mythology explaining their urSkek relationship. Age of Resistance, released in 2019, expands their earlier rule, essence experiments and internal divisions. Production clothing and puppet mechanics should not be confused with in-world anatomy or used to invent an additional hidden species.

Canon & continuity

The official S glossary identifies the body form and divided origin, while the inspected independent species guide explains the paired injury and death link. The film and prequel provide the primary stories. The profile avoids the claim that every Skeksis possesses an identical temperament, strategy or body condition throughout all periods.

The official production account credits Froud’s established character designs before puppet construction. This is a production attribution, not a biological or folklore-origin claim.
