Overview
The developed novels place dwarf culture in mines, cities, workshops and the Watch, with knowledge of metal and practical manufacture joined to inherited institutions. Traditional presentation minimizes the public distinction between men and women, but individual characters challenge the expectation that one outward form must define everyone's proper identity. Cheery Littlebottom's choices become part of a wider argument about what counts as acceptable dwarfish behavior.
The Fifth Elephant and Thud! extend that disagreement through authority, deep-dwelling traditionalists, urban communities and remembered wars with trolls. These are political and cultural conflicts rather than separate biological dwarf species or a universal inability to adapt. A single love-of-gold stereotype cannot explain their craft values, languages, divergent beliefs and negotiated relationships. The profile keeps the qualified Discworld treatment distinct from Tolkien's Dwarves, folklore dwarfs and game ancestries with unrelated origin histories.
First appearances & development
The early series uses fantasy dwarf imagery, while the 1996–2005 novels listed here provide the developed cultural and political baseline. This is a selective treatment rather than a claim to have dated the first passing dwarf mention. Later detail is not projected unmarked onto every early comic scene.
Canon & continuity
The independent dwarf guide identifies craft traditions, public gender customs, Cheery's changes and the later political novels. Official Fifth Elephant and Thud! pages corroborate the relevant conflict settings. Detailed guide interpretations are not converted into universal moral rules, and no new full reading of every dwarf-focused book is claimed.
