Overview

The novels develop living bodies associated with different rocks and a silicon-based nervous system. Heat can interfere with mental performance, making a troll in warm Ankh-Morpork appear less capable than the same individual under more suitable conditions. That physical difference is important to how others misunderstand them, but it is not a license to treat them as inert materials or to assume identical intelligence across every person.

Watch stories place trolls in policing, urban work and political conflict, while their fraught relationship with dwarfs carries memories of Koom Valley into contemporary life. Thud! investigates how competing versions of the past can drive renewed violence and how interpretation can change relationships. Troll society is therefore more than a collection of bridge monsters. The profile qualifies franchise biology and distinguishes cultural hostilities from an unavoidable law that every troll must hate every dwarf.

First appearances & development

Discworld's early books introduce troll forms, with Men at Arms in 1993 and Thud! in 2005 developing urban relationships and the dwarf–troll conflict. This selective entry does not impose one early comic portrayal on the later, more differentiated people or claim an exhaustive first-mention audit across the series.

Canon & continuity

The independent troll guide supports mineral bodies, temperature effects and later story roles. The official Thud! synopsis directly identifies the dangerous uncertainty about Koom Valley's history. The named novels provide the primary bibliography, while broad guide speculations about the original cause of every feud are not treated as confirmed historical facts.
