Overview

Draenei are exiles descended from the eredar of Argus. Blizzard's Burning Crusade retrospective describes Velen rejecting Sargeras's offer after foreseeing its demonic consequences, while Kil'jaeden and Archimonde accept it. The naaru help Velen and his followers escape. Their new name identifies them as exiled people; it does not make Draenor their original birthplace. That world becomes a later refuge, shared with shamanic orcs before Kil'jaeden's agents corrupt the clans and the Horde attacks the draenei.

Survivors endure further displacement after portals shatter Draenor. Velen's people eventually escape Outland aboard a satellite structure of Tempest Keep and crash on Azeroth. The Exodar's remains become their base. Their Alliance allegiance initially serves opposition to the Burning Legion. The maintained race account describes a later search for purpose after the Legion's defeat, while the Prophet's Lesson introduction presents an earlier uncertainty over their future place in the Alliance. These are different moments in a continuing exile history.

The familiar playable people have hooves and horns, but earlier strategy-game portrayals and the Broken survivors require distinct version identification. The retrospective places Akama's Broken alongside Illidan during the overthrow of Magtheridon; their experience is not simply identical to Velen's refugee community. Elekk mounts preserve a connection with the draenei's former home rather than requiring reliance solely on Azeroth's native animals. Faith in the Light supplies a powerful cultural framework, but the source histories also involve leadership decisions, competing allegiances and practical adaptation after catastrophe.

First appearances & development

The Burning Crusade introduced the familiar playable draenei in 2007, following earlier Warcraft III representations of survivors. The 2021 Classic retrospective revisits that expansion's historical setting; it is not a new species debut. Warlords of Draenor's alternate world and later Lightforged communities remain separate comparisons rather than substitutes for Velen's main-history exile.

Canon & continuity

The complete Burning Crusade Classic retrospective supplies the selected Argus, Draenor and Broken history. Complete race-page lore supports the Exodar, mounts and later purpose. The complete Prophet's Lesson announcement includes only a short opening excerpt, not a newly read whole story. Its meditative uncertainty is not interpreted as an infallible prediction or universal experience.
