Overview

The despair squid is a huge aquatic organism whose defensive ink traps attackers in a shared hallucinatory scenario. Rather than simply making a person sad, its attack undermines the crew's understanding of who they are and supplies a convincing alternative life. Back to Reality first places the creature beside an underwater salvage discovery whose dead occupants foreshadow the danger. The official database associates it with accelerated evolution on an ocean planet, but presents that explanation through Kryten's uncertain account. Its apparent dominance is therefore a diagnosis within the story, not a complete survey proving that nothing else lives there. The mechanism also exposes a conspicuous fictional inconsistency: even holographic Rimmer participates, although the guide acknowledges that absorption of a biological toxin is unexplained.

The later female form produces pleasurable hallucination rather than the male's despair. It remains a related form within this one profile, not a second entry created from the nickname elation squid. Back to Earth's apparent reality shift again makes the organism a device for testing both character beliefs and audience confidence in the surrounding story. Official continuity commentary adds a further limit: the 2005 web comic Prelude to Nanarchy connected the end of Series V to the missing ship of Series VI, while the 2009 television special required a return to Red Dwarf so that Cat could carry a female squid aboard. The site's 2011 reissue explicitly notes the resulting conflict. This profile preserves that version difference instead of inventing a hidden journey that makes every published account fit.

First appearances & development

Back to Reality (1992) introduces the squid; Back to Earth (2009) revisits the organism through a female form. The bibliography distinguishes transmitted television, published scripts and later official commentary. These dates identify the treatments used here; they do not claim that each detail was present in the earliest draft. The show's novels, deleted material and television continuity can take different paths.

Canon & continuity

The linked Grant Naylor Productions database entry directly identifies this creature and its fictional function. Additional official episode and production material supports the specific credits, narrative consequences or version differences discussed here. These sources are bounded treatments; a second reference article is not represented as a second independent story appearance.
