Overview
Cockatrices are dangerous winged predators with a sharp beak and a tail capable of deadly strikes. Wild Hunt explicitly rejects the superstition that their gaze alone kills, so their fictional anatomy should not be replaced by a traditional cockatrice's petrifying stare. Caves, ruined buildings and cellars provide typical shelter, putting the creature in spaces where a traveller may have little room to avoid its wings or blows.
The games classify and confront it as a physical monster, with aerial movement followed by a more immediate ground threat. That encounter pattern explains why location and body parts are more useful to the profile than a borrowed mythological label. This entry compares the earlier and later game treatments and keeps the Cockatrice separate from the Basilisk, even though in-world misunderstandings connect the two. It does not assign every named contract specimen another species identity.
First appearances & development
The selected version is 2007 and 2015 game. CD Projekt RED's games adapt Sapkowski's setting while adding their own creature designs, quest histories and combat classifications. This profile identifies those game treatments, rather than asserting that every detail originates in the novels. Spellings and named variants remain within the same account unless a substantive independent comparison is required.
Canon & continuity
The Witcher Wiki is an independent reference, and its public MediaWiki API supplied the version-labeled bestiary text and relevant quest accounts. Publisher-hosted Prima guide excerpts provide additional context where listed. The bibliography identifies the actual game or reference chapter; it does not imply a complete audit of every novel, expansion, patch, screen adaptation or full guidebook.
