Overview
The catoblepas favors swamps but can forage through woodland or open ground, destroying obstacles to obtain food. Its diet is not confined to flesh: first edition describes indiscriminate feeding on vegetation and animals. Other creatures avoid its territories because of aggression and a pervasive foulness. The beast may bully smaller neighbors without immediately killing every creature it encounters. This creates a hostile feeding area rather than a predator that exists only at the moment initiative is rolled.
The selected accounts emphasize breath, poison and territorial contamination, not a universally lethal gaze borrowed from other catoblepas traditions. Second edition describes hunting places and nests remaining foul after departure, while first edition describes poison used underwater to kill fish and reduce competitors' food. Claims that people domesticate such a beast are qualified in the first account, which suggests magic may be necessary. Its swimming, antlers, hooves and jaws belong to Paizo's particular body and encounter design; neither edition supplies a model of a docile working animal.
First appearances & development
The paired sources are first-edition and legacy second-edition Bestiary 2, published in 2010 and 2020. The creature name has older non-Pathfinder uses, so this qualified profile follows the game's particular swamp-beast treatment. No direct creator statement establishing which ancient text informed Paizo's design was inspected.
Canon & continuity
The licensed first-edition description supports habitat, broad diet, territorial intimidation and underwater use of poison. The second-edition entry separately supplies persistent nest contamination and its chosen attacks. Mechanical cones, recovery intervals and defenses remain version-specific; the profile does not combine both stat blocks or infer a gaze absent from these witnesses.
