Overview
The nuckelavee combines an equine body with a humanoid upper form growing from its back, without skin covering the apparent flesh. The second-edition account places its source in the First World and draws it toward polluted waterways. It is not an incorruptible spirit enforcing a fair ecological law. The creature kills innocent passersby as readily as polluters, and restoration work can threaten the foul habitat on which its continued presence depends.
Breath and physical contact carry destructive effects, including the disease called mortasheen. First edition emphasizes the contradiction of a being that hates corruption yet spreads it, while the second-edition legacy text explicitly notes hostility toward cleanup workers. The first account rejects several supposed protective folk remedies within the setting; that statement is not an assertion about the original Orcadian tradition. Weapons, disease procedures and water magic belong to Paizo's version. Its origin, environment and cruelty explain a particular fantasy encounter without making real polluted rivers supernatural in this fashion.
First appearances & development
The selected accounts appear in first-edition Bestiary 3 (2011) and legacy second-edition Bestiary 2 (2020); the first source also identifies the earlier Blood for Blood adventure. A separate qualified profile is necessary because the name predates Pathfinder. No exact direct folklore borrowing testimony from its designers was inspected.
Canon & continuity
The transcriptions support the composite skinless form, disease-bearing attacks, pollution association and indiscriminate victims. The First World explanation is specific to second edition's description. Folk protections rejected by the first account are fictional setting commentary, and the different disease and breath rules are not promoted to timeless canon.
