Overview
A shoggoth can form new sensory organs, mouths and limbs across an amorphous body. Its strength and adaptability once suited imposed labor, but the accounts describe rebellion against its creators. The identity of those creators is not equally certain in every version: first edition offers competing suggestions, including aboleths or something older, while the second-edition legacy account describes an alien species without naming a definite biological lineage.
Shoggoths persist in isolated depths, trenches and ruins, engulfing intruders rather than negotiating with them. The second-edition account frames their destructive treatment of ordinary peoples as indifference, not necessarily a moral hatred. Cults may sacrifice victims to them, but receive no dependable response to worship. Their disturbing vocalization and mutability belong to the monster's presentation; rumor of still more intelligent individuals remains rumor. This qualified entry concerns Paizo's version and does not merge its defenses, cosmology or creator uncertainty with every Lovecraftian or later gaming shoggoth.
First appearances & development
The comparison uses the first-edition Bestiary (2009) and original second-edition Bestiary (2019), not their later remastered replacements. The first source also indexes Crucible of Chaos as an earlier treatment. The original literary creature has a separate publication history; this account limits itself to Pathfinder's selected descriptions.
Canon & continuity
The licensed pages were inspected for amorphous anatomy, service and rebellion, isolated habitats, engulfing and cult relationships. Competing creator theories and greater-intelligence rumors stay qualified. Mechanical creature type and immunities can vary by edition, so first edition's ooze classification is not used to override all subsequent rules.
