Overview
Cardassians are introduced in The Next Generation's The Wounded, where a Federation captain attacks their vessels after an earlier conflict. Later stories expose the brutality of Cardassian military authority and its occupation of Bajor. Deep Space Nine develops that setting beyond a succession of enemies: the Obsidian Order exercises clandestine power, while exiled Garak works as a tailor and cultivates literature as well as intelligence contacts. His loyalty to Cardassia does not make his conduct identical to Dukat's or Seska's, whose particular allegiances follow different paths.
Second Skin gives political dissent a household setting. The intelligence operative Entek deceives Kira into believing that she might be Iliana Ghemor, using Tekeny Ghemor's feelings for his missing daughter to expose his involvement in helping dissidents escape. The eventual rescue leaves Kira and Tekeny with a continuing bond. Ties of Blood and Water revisits it when Tekeny is dying and Kira learns of his participation in an attack on a Bajoran monastery. Their relationship cannot erase that history, but it creates a difficult opportunity for care, accountability and grief beyond biological kinship.
The Dominion alliance also changes the political situation rather than defining an eternal Cardassian allegiance. The official retrospective describes resistance, recovered independence and devastating bombardment, followed by Garak's return to aid rebuilding. Its discussion of President Rillak in Discovery notes mixed Cardassian and Bajoran heritage, but an individual's ancestry alone does not establish the date or terms of Cardassia joining the Federation. The profile therefore distinguishes depicted institutions, choices and consequences from a uniform species personality or a conjectural constitutional history.
First appearances & development
Cardassians first appear in The Wounded (1991). Deep Space Nine elaborates their occupation, institutions and internal dissent across its later run. This account uses selected Prime-continuity television examples; the earlier skirmishes occur within the story's history, not as earlier real-world screen appearances.
Canon & continuity
The complete official Cardassian overview, Second Skin comparison and non-blood-family feature were inspected, with The Wounded's episode metadata. The two family essays partly discuss the same events; repeated facts are counted once. The overview's inference about eventual Federation membership is expressly withheld rather than adopted as demonstrated canon.
