Overview
Changelings are shapeshifting beings whose shared Great Link and leadership of the Dominion give them an unusual combination of bodily flexibility and political power. Odo's life among solid-bodied people reveals a different experience from the Founders' collective suspicion. Transformation makes familiar appearances unreliable, while memories and loyalties remain essential to understanding individual choices.
Deep Space Nine develops a conflict between protection from persecution and authoritarian control of others. Not every Changeling accepts the same relationship to the Link or to outsiders, as Chimera makes clear. This franchise-specific people should be kept separate from folkloric changelings, which concern substitutions and child belief rather than an interstellar shapeshifting civilization.
