Overview

Bajorans enter The Next Generation through Ensign Ro, whose introduction places displaced communities and the Cardassian occupation alongside service in Starfleet. Ro corrects Picard's use of her name: the family name precedes the personal name. Her earring also becomes a point of conflict with uniform regulations. Later stories develop the people through reconstruction, resistance and differing ways to preserve belonging, rather than treating one officer's career as the experience of every Bajoran.

Deep Space Nine makes religion an active institution within that society. Devout Bajorans understand the wormhole as the Celestial Temple and its inhabitants as the Prophets, while Starfleet initially uses another explanatory vocabulary. Sisko's role as Emissary complicates his official command. In the Hands of the Prophets places schooling at the centre of a dispute: Vedek Winn challenges Keiko's teaching, and the conflict is followed by a bombing. The publisher's discussion also contrasts this with Destiny, where Sisko listens to Vedek Yarka's warning while continuing a scientific project. These examples preserve different relationships to authority, prophecy and education instead of making religious belief a single personality.

The d'ja pagh carries another connection between identity and material culture. The official Picard feature describes it as a family heirloom whose forms can differ across generations. Ro's 2023 earring has both a religious significance and a practical story function, concealing the evidence she passes to Picard. Prop master Jeff Lombardi explains that its redesign needed to remain recognisable in a hand rather than only on an ear. Cross-cultural households add further complexity: Proka Migdal loves his adopted Cardassian son Rugal, yet hostility to Cardassians harms the boy's understanding of himself. That is a particular household's conflict, not a universal Bajoran response to adoption.

First appearances & development

The Bajoran introduction in Ensign Ro aired in 1991, before Deep Space Nine began in 1993. Picard later revisits Ro and the meaning of her earring in 2023. The account uses Prime-continuity television references, with occupation, religious institutions and personal choices assigned to their particular stories.

Canon & continuity

The inspected Ensign Ro reference supports the debut, naming correction and initial uniform conflict. Complete official religion, earring and non-blood-family features support the selected later examples. Their real-world comparisons are not used as a genealogy for Bajorans; prop design testimony is distinguished from in-world cultural practice.
