Overview
CIP locates Bunun communities along the Central Range in Nantou, Hualien, Taitung and Kaohsiung. It also notes migration to cities.
The council identifies internal branches that differ in dialect and custom; these are treated here as variation within Bunun, not as separate peoples. CIP describes the malahodaigian Ear Shooting Festival and pasibutbut, a polyphonic prayer that community belief connects with the millet harvest.
CIP reports that forced relocation during the Japanese era created mixed settlements and altered earlier distributions. Present-day communities therefore reflect adaptation, not an unchanged mountain society.
