Overview

Griffith explicitly omits his verse translation of cantos VI.55–58 and supplies a prose account in its place. In the précis of VI.55–56, Ravana sends Akampan and his army out despite evil omens. As the rakshasas lose ground, Akampan attacks with sustained volleys of arrows.

Hanuman confronts him and throws mountain peaks, which the archer checks with his missiles. Hanuman finally kills him with a tree. These details come from the translator’s abridgement, not a complete English rendering of those cantos. VI.59 subsequently names an Akampan in the army again; this profile does not silently invent an escape or resurrection to reconcile the sequence.
