Overview
The acklay is a tall many-legged creature with long pointed limbs and a toothed head, introduced as one of the Geonosian arena beasts in Attack of the Clones. Its appearance combines recognizable arthropod-like features with an alien body plan. The animal pursues Obi-Wan and makes forceful stabbing strikes into the ground, providing a different threat from the nexu's rapid feline-like movement.
Its strength accidentally breaks the Jedi's restraints, showing how a monster intended to enforce an execution can also create an opportunity for escape. Lucasfilm's reference documents the encounter and its resistance to a pike attack. Those events belong to one captive specimen and do not establish every acklay's temperament or a complete natural habitat. The profile preserves observed anatomy and behavior while leaving reproductive history, evolutionary ancestry and purported design inspirations to separately supported sources.
First appearances & development
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002). Selected released screen works and Lucasfilm's official creature reference establish this profile. Film edition changes, separate individuals and the boundary between current canon and Legends are retained where relevant. The entry does not claim an exhaustive earliest-publication audit across novelizations, merchandise, games and reference books.
Canon & continuity
Lucasfilm's exact Databank entry supplies the creature's identification, selected physical or behavioral traits and screen appearance list. The named film or series provides the narrative example. Short catalogue descriptions do not support a complete invented biology. Episode-specific details, film edition changes and additional Legends material require their own evidence; no extended official text or artwork is reproduced.

Family, evolution & connections
Velociraptor
The official Lucasfilm essay reports that George Lucas requested a creature combining a Velociraptor and a praying mantis, resulting in the Acklay. This establishes an explicitly reported design brief rather than ancestry. The museum reference distinguishes the real, small feathered theropod from popular oversized film reconstructions; the essay does not specify which reconstruction Lucas had in mind.
Praying mantises (Mantodea)
Lucasfilm reports George Lucas specifically requested a cross between a praying mantis and a Velociraptor when the Acklay was created. The mantis is therefore a documented design input, although no particular mantis species is identified. Mantodea is an insect order; the fictional hybrid body and enormous size are artistic inventions, not an evolutionary relationship with terrestrial insects.
