Overview
Zu is a recurring giant bird monster whose size and broad wings give it an imposing presence in Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy IV uses a Zu in the opening airship sequence and includes later encounters near Mysidia. Despite the shared name, subsequent games redraw its body, feathering and proportions, producing a recurring design category rather than one animal inhabiting all the series' worlds.
Final Fantasy X makes a Zu part of Tidus's arrival on Bikanel Island, where companions rejoin him during the confrontation. This is a specific story encounter as well as a returning enemy type. Square Enix's card-art interview discusses illustrator Kumiko Koike's effort to convey the creature's frightening scale; it does not establish a complete mythology or biological history for every version. The entry covers IV and X and leaves exact elemental weaknesses to the corresponding edition.
