Overview

Moogles are small intelligent beings commonly recognized by their wings, round noses and pom-pom antennae. They can be neighbours, shopkeepers, messengers or playable allies, depending on the world. Their cheerful presentation should not obscure that several games treat them as social peoples with skills and responsibilities rather than interchangeable mascots.

Final Fantasy VI gives Mog and other moogles an active role, while later worlds use different silhouettes and customs. In his 2020 interview, Koichi Ishii recalls inventing the character in elementary school as a white, koala-like creature with bat wings. He imagined an inflated body floating, with wings steering rather than flapping. He credits Yoshitaka Amano with adding the head's puffball. Ishii did not write the moogles' dialogue, and originally imagined a quieter comic personality in a planned trio with the chocobo and a third, unused talkative character. Those recollections explain his original conception; they do not prescribe every later game's anatomy or speech.

First appearances & development

Final Fantasy III (1990) introduces moogles in the numbered series. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Each numbered game is a distinct world; recurring names do not imply one continuous species history.

Koala

Koichi Ishii describes drawing white, koala-like fantasy creatures as a schoolchild before moogles appeared in Final Fantasy. He explicitly connects the large nose and basic physical design to koalas while warning that a moogle is not simply a koala. This documents an artistic input, not biological descent.

Bats

Ishii confirms that the moogle combines koala-like features with bat-like wings. In his original conception the creature inflated its body to float, and the wings controlled its direction rather than providing ordinary flapping flight. Real bats are mammals whose wings support powered flight; the resemblance is deliberately transformed by fantasy.

Moogles (モーグリ, mōguri) are a sentient fictional species created for the Final Fantasy franchise by Square Enix (originally Square). A white-furred creature usually sporting wings and a pom-pom-tipped antenna, they were first introduced in Final Fantasy III (1990), and have since featured in various capacities in multiple mainline and spin-off Final Fantasy titles. Some Moogle characters recur in major roles, such as Mog who appears in a playable or supporting role across several mainline and spin-off games, and the moogle Montblanc from the Ivalice setting.

Moogles were created by artist and designer Koichi Ishii, based on drawings he created during his school days and inspired by an all-white koala; the name is a compound of the Japanese names for "bat" and "mole". Ishii handled the original design for Final Fantasy III, with later recurring elements created by Yoshitaka Amano in Final Fantasy VI (1994). The moogle has undergone multiple redesigns from artists including Toshiyuki Itahana and Ryoma Ito. Moogles have become a series mascot popular with series fans and journalists, and feature prominently in merchandise. Some of the Moogle's appearances have seen varied responses.
