Overview

A worg is a large, cunning predator that can be raised as a mount by goblins and hobgoblins. The 2014 legacy description gives it its own language and Goblin, with some individuals learning Common. Its association with riders therefore involves an intelligent creature with preferences, not simply an ordinary horse or wolf under a different name. The same account warns that mistreatment or inadequate food can turn it against a rider.

Keen hearing and smell support tracking, while its bite can bring a victim down. The official profile's forest, grassland and hill habitats place it across varied wilderness terrain rather than one mandatory lair type. This entry follows the selected D&D treatment and is distinct from Tolkien's Wargs or a generic folkloric wolf. Its hostile legacy characterization does not supply a complete culture, universal personal history or an unchanged rules package across third edition and later revisions.

First appearances & development

Selected treatment: fifth-edition legacy Monster Manual (2014), with third-edition comparison (2000). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Lore is anchored to the listed editions; 2014 fifth-edition mechanics are not presented as 2024 rules.

Canon & continuity

The linked official legacy profile or publisher preview directly supports the selected creature's listed abilities and habitat where supplied. The 2014 Monster Manual is the principal edition, and the 2000 manual provides a historical bibliography comparison. Complete older manual text was not reread during this task. Revised fifth-edition books and web profiles are not silently substituted for these legacy rules.
