Overview

In the v.3.5 rules, a blink dog is a Medium magical beast with a canine language capable of conveying complex information. Packs use apparently scattered relocations to surround an opponent. Two separate supernatural abilities explain that movement: Blink can be activated or ended freely under the spell's rules, while Dimension Door relocates it. The latter carries only the dog, cannot place it inside solid matter, and permits it to act afterward. This older combination is more specific than simply saying that the creature teleports.

The forest-associated 2014 Monster Manual profile instead classifies the dog as fey and gives it keen hearing and smell. It speaks its own language and understands Sylvan without speaking it. Its Teleport action moves it to a visible, unoccupied place within 40 feet, carries worn or carried equipment, and includes a bite before or after the move. The lawful-good alignment and language distinguish the published creature from an ordinary hunting dog even though its attack is still a bite.

The revised 2025 profile keeps the fey classification and 40-foot relocation but makes Teleport a bonus action, separate from the Bite action. It adds darkvision and lists comprehension of Elvish and Sylvan rather than a spoken Blink Dog language. Its teleport text also omits the earlier equipment clause. These are identifiable changes in the printed game treatment; the omissions alone do not establish a new story explaining lost speech or an inability to move possessions. The legacy bite-and-teleport sequence should therefore not be substituted for the revised action sequence.

First appearances & development

This comparison follows the v.3.5 System Reference Document, the legacy 2014 Monster Manual, and the revised Monster Manual published in 2025. Their classifications and action rules describe different editions of the same named D&D creature. The retained 2000 manual is historical bibliography, rather than a newly inspected witness for these differences.
