Overview

Water Hags are dangerous wetland monsters with a distorted womanlike silhouette, claws and bony growths, associated with shallow water and muddy ground. They can move through mud as well as swim, allowing an attack to emerge beside prey rather than only from a visible shoreline. Thrown mud can blind an opponent and turn the habitat itself into a weapon. Their shared hunting grounds with Drowners do not prove the folk claim that they are Drowners' wives.

The third game places these creatures around rivers, swamps and travel routes where poor visibility already complicates movement. This profile follows that game and its licensed guide, preserving the difference between narrator-supported abilities and a villager's crude explanation of kinship. Water Hag and Grave Hag are separately named monster types with different feeding and tactical accounts. A common hag-shaped body does not make them the same as every old-woman apparition in traditional stories.

First appearances & development

The selected version is 2015 game and licensed-guide. CD Projekt RED's games adapt Sapkowski's setting while adding their own creature designs, quest histories and combat classifications. This profile identifies those game treatments, rather than asserting that every detail originates in the novels. Spellings and named variants remain within the same account unless a substantive independent comparison is required.

Canon & continuity

The Witcher Wiki is an independent reference, and its public MediaWiki API supplied the version-labeled bestiary text and relevant quest accounts. Publisher-hosted Prima guide excerpts provide additional context where listed. The bibliography identifies the actual game or reference chapter; it does not imply a complete audit of every novel, expansion, patch, screen adaptation or full guidebook.
