Overview

Grave Hags feed near cemeteries and battlefields, using long, mobile tongues to extract marrow from bones. Their appearance resembles an aged, misshapen woman, but claws and surprising speed make a close encounter dangerous. When accessible remains run out, the bestiary describes them killing and burying fresh victims to provide future food. That behaviour gives their association with graves an active predatory meaning rather than a purely atmospheric one.

Their tongues serve as weapons as well as feeding organs, distinguishing them from Water Hags whose mud attacks exploit a wetland habitat. Wild Hunt's monster work and the licensed guide provide the selected account. This profile keeps particular named contract histories separate from species behaviour and does not turn an ingredient drop or combat value into an anatomical certainty across every adaptation. Grave Hag is the game's specific monster type, not a synonym for all malicious female spirits.

First appearances & development

The selected version is 2015 game and licensed-guide. CD Projekt RED's games adapt Sapkowski's setting while adding their own creature designs, quest histories and combat classifications. This profile identifies those game treatments, rather than asserting that every detail originates in the novels. Spellings and named variants remain within the same account unless a substantive independent comparison is required.

Canon & continuity

The Witcher Wiki is an independent reference, and its public MediaWiki API supplied the version-labeled bestiary text and relevant quest accounts. Publisher-hosted Prima guide excerpts provide additional context where listed. The bibliography identifies the actual game or reference chapter; it does not imply a complete audit of every novel, expansion, patch, screen adaptation or full guidebook.
