Overview

The Watchdog's body suggests a ruined fossil or a creature burned until bone shows through its remaining flesh. The official Japanese introduction places it among special guardians left by the inhuman occupants of the underground tombs, without identifying a natural breeding population. Its flames are part of its threat rather than an injury the hunter can exploit with more fire. It can charge, bite, smash downward and spread burning attacks across the ground; later attacks include wider fire bursts and an eruption around its body.

The first Pthumerian Labyrinth places this guardian on its third layer, and a later Cursed Pthumerian Defilement encounter gives the familiar form a different challenge. Its head and legs can be damaged to produce openings, although the usual frontal visceral follow-up is unavailable. Serrated weapons still benefit against its beast classification. The earlier encounter awards the Central Pthumeru Chalice. That object's account identifies the ancient labyrinth's builders as Pthumerians reputed to possess superhuman knowledge, but the guardian's position does not make the Watchdog one of that people. It remains a creature protecting an older world, encountered through ritual exploration rather than Yharnam's streets.

First appearances & development

This guardian appears in Bloodborne's 2015 base-game Chalice Dungeons and in the publisher's pre-release creature introduction. Fixed labyrinth and later cursed encounters are grouped as appearances of the same monster form. The selected sources describe its guarding role but do not supply a named creator, individual former human or animal genealogy.

Canon & continuity

Publisher text establishes the ancient tomb-guardian presentation. Separate encounter references corroborate placement, fire attacks and breakable body parts. The Central Pthumeru Chalice's reproduced text supplies the builders' lore and reward connection. These witnesses distinguish a guardian's institutional role from a claim that it shares the Pthumerians' ancestry or society.
