Overview

A vex makes a defended interior vulnerable in a way a ground-bound raider cannot. The evoker summons a flying sword-wielder that passes through blocks, so a wall does not provide the same protection it offers against many other enemies. The 2017 publisher feature describes gray winged figures that turn red during an attack charge, and records immunity to fire and lava. Their behavior draws attention upward and sideways; simply retreating while trading blows does not control an attacker approaching through the surrounding structure.

Jens Bergensten traced the shape to doodles of a small winged humanoid, with angelic or devilish associations rather than a fixed traditional species. Limits on the summoned creatures were also deliberate: they stay around their summoning area and eventually perish, preventing abandoned groups from filling the world indefinitely. The Java 1.19.3 release in December 2022 changed the model and textures but retained the older hitbox, then slightly oversized relative to the new appearance, to make fighting easier. A visual redesign therefore did not automatically shrink every combat interaction. Similarity to the allay is not sufficient evidence for a shared origin.

First appearances & development

Tom Stone's 2017 official feature documents the vex's established role and Bergensten's initial shape brief. The selected later witness is the released Java 1.19.3 changelog from 2022, not a preliminary artist tweet. This profile does not assign an exact first snapshot date from an uninspected chronology.

Canon & continuity

The named participant interview supports summoning limits, flight, phasing and the winged-humanoid sketch. The released changelog directly confirms the model, texture and retained-hitbox distinction. These witnesses address appearance and encounter design; they do not define vex society, biological reproduction or a canonical transformation from allays.
