Overview

A Phantom has ragged wings, a skeletal-looking body and luminous eyes. It circles above a vulnerable player before diving to attack, giving prolonged sleepless activity a threat from above. The 2026 official guide describes nighttime encounters after several in-game days without sleep. Daylight burns the creature, while cover or avoidance changes the encounter. Its membranes can repair Elytra or support slow-falling potions, connecting a flying enemy to the tools used for safer flight.

The winning 2017 Monster of the Night Skies did not enter the game unchanged. Bergensten removed a mouth that contributed little to gameplay and looked wrong in the model. Boerstra emphasized visible skeletal structure and chose blue over a red alternative that suggested the Nether. These participant explanations describe visual development, not a biological skeleton lineage.

The team also removed planned spawning in the End because players there could not use sleep to control the encounters. That change established a clearer relationship between threat and available precautions. The later guide adds that cats can keep Phantoms away, a separate practical defense from sleep or shelter. The transition from draft to released behavior is important: a 2017 vote image, a 2018 snapshot and a later guide are distinct witnesses. This creature’s insomnia mechanic is a fantasy rule, not a medical account of real sleep deprivation or proof that dream spirits become physical animals.

First appearances & development

The publisher’s later guide places Phantoms in the July 2018 Update Aquatic release, following the 2017 winning vote. Tom Stone’s March 2018 participant feature concerns development snapshots and redesign before that release. The 2026 menagerie is a later selected behavior account; it does not establish that every present feature existed in the voted pitch.

Canon & continuity

The full official development article provides Bergensten and Boerstra’s explanations of model, color and dimension changes. The independently inspected later menagerie supplies selected spawning, membrane uses and feline avoidance. Removed mouths and End spawning remain production history; exact speeds, distances and every edition’s sleep timer are not generalized across the franchise.
