Overview
A Creeper has an upright green body, four short legs, no arms and a stark pixelated face. Its threat depends on proximity and surprise: it quietly approaches, hisses and then explodes, damaging nearby players and blocks. This makes an encounter consequential even when the player survives, because the same attack can damage a carefully built structure. Lightning can create a charged form with a stronger blast; the profile treats that as an altered state of the monster rather than a separate species. Exact radii, damage and timing depend on the game implementation and are not anatomical constants.
In Mojang’s 2017 feature, Jens Bergensten recounts how Markus Persson’s intended pig model acquired wrongly oriented proportions and became an unnerving upright creature. Persson retained it, and an explosion suggestion supplied its eventual attack. Bergensten also describes uncertainty over whether its surface should be imagined as foliage, fur or flesh. The production accident establishes a development relationship with the pig model, not an in-world parentage. Its ambiguity is part of the creature’s presentation: green pixels do not settle its tissue composition.
The 2023 tabletop conversion classifies the Creeper as a Monstrosity and gives feline avoidance separate turn-based rules. That adaptation preserves the threat while changing its mechanical framework; its distances and conditions are not automatically Minecraft game-engine rules.
First appearances & development
The inspected reference distinguishes the model’s August 2009 development from its September appearance in Survival Test. The 2017 official feature supplies Bergensten’s retrospective explanation rather than an independently inspected original development log. Minecraft’s 2011 full release and the 2023 tabletop conversion are later selected witnesses, not the creature’s earliest appearance.
Canon & continuity
Mojang’s complete feature provides direct participant testimony about the accidental pig model and unresolved material appearance. The English reference supplies the selected chronology, stealth and charged-state account. The official compendium’s indexed Creeper section was inspected separately for adaptation classification and cat avoidance. No speculative plant reproduction or literal TNT anatomy is inferred.

Misdimensioned pig model
Bergensten attributes the Creeper to Notch’s upright pig-model mistake, retained as a monster; no biological ancestry.
