Overview
The Ender Dragon is a large flying creature with a dark body and bright violet eyes. It attacks visitors to the central island of the End with projectiles and breath. Crystals atop surrounding towers restore its health, tying the encounter to structures outside the dragon’s own body. Players can remove those sources before concentrating on the flying target. When the dragon descends above the portal, the selected guide distinguishes the opportunity for close attacks from its aerial phase.
Victory produces experience and a dragon egg, opens routes onward and allows return to the Overworld. Passing through the exit presents the End Poem and credits, but the same world remains available for further exploration. End Crystals can also be used to summon another fight. These mechanics do not establish that the egg must hatch into a tame offspring, nor that every summoned encounter proves a separate natural species. The dragon’s apparent connection with Endermen likewise does not by itself demonstrate kinship.
The 2016 Ender Update brought the encounter and related features to Pocket and Windows 10 editions, so the original date does not represent every platform’s access. The 2023 tabletop conversion leaves the dragon’s guardian-or-prisoner status uncertain. That speculation is not resolved into a universal origin; conversion defenses and base-game progression remain separate.
First appearances & development
Mojang’s retrospective places the Ender Dragon in the November 2011 full release. The December 2016 Pocket/Windows 10 announcement documents a later platform arrival and includes respawning, breath and End portals. The 2023 compendium and 2025 official menagerie are subsequent adaptations or guides, not evidence that the original encounter always had every later feature.
Canon & continuity
The complete official 2025 guide supplies appearance, tower crystals, combat phases and continued exploration. The actual 2016 release announcement anchors platform scope. The compendium’s indexed dragon section supplies only its scoped tabletop identity and uncertain guardian/prisoner description. No complete original game replay or egg-hatching system was inspected, and no universal dragon genealogy is asserted.
