Overview

The Vashta Nerada are minute carnivorous organisms that become lethal when concentrated into a swarm. They occur in small quantities on many worlds, including Earth, but the Library encounter demonstrates how a dense population can strip people to bone. Their shadow-like presence makes illumination and a familiar room unreliable guides to safety, while occupied spacesuits allow the dead to continue confronting survivors.

The Doctor ultimately negotiates a division between human visitors and the organisms' book-filled habitat, rather than treating the species as something that must be universally exterminated. This resolution connects the immediate danger with the swarm's claim to a home. Their ability to coordinate and communicate during this encounter is significant, but the profile concerns an ecological predator collective rather than asserting a fully documented interplanetary civilization.

First appearances & development

The two linked 2008 television episodes form one continuous Library story, with Steven Moffat credited for both. This entry uses the BBC Studios creature profile to identify the swarm and the conclusion of its encounter, rather than treating the skeleton-filled suits as a different species or a general resurrection mechanism.

Canon & continuity

The official profile directly supports natural occurrence, concentrated flesh-stripping and the Doctor's negotiated withdrawal. The episode pages verify writer and story placement. No direct quotation is included, and the description does not attempt an exhaustive account of licensed games, comics or subsequent uses of the organisms.
